Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 325
Half Dollar. 1795. Overton-102. Rarity-5. VF-30. Medium gray in color and decent for the grade. It appears that someone turned a screw between stars 9 and 10 on the obverse and on C of AMERICA on the reverse. Nearly Condition Census and may qualify at that level for the variety. Well struck and desirable.

Half Dollar. 1834 Breen 4705. Large date, small letters, normal 4. NGC graded MS-67. A monster coin! Although some of the obverse stars are not fully struck up, this gem is memorable for its impeccably pristine satiny mint surfaces. All is further enhanced by delicate violet toning with a hint of blue iridescense at the extreme borders. Certainly amongst the finest extant. As of this cataloging, this is the highest specimen graded by this service.

Half Dollar. 1835. PCGS graded Proof 64. Overton-101. Rarity 8 as a Proof. An extremely rare coin indeed, Breen in his classic Encyclopedia of Proof coins notes only dies for Overton-110 as producing two proof coins for this year. Perhaps a few more have turned up as several big name collections have finally seen the light of day after generations off the market, but still and all, this is an extremely rare Proof issue. The fields have full mirror reflectivity and this continues even between the shield lines on the reverse. Most of the stars show some definition, but their radial lines are a bit flat. All is toned a medium gray with some darker colors near the periphery. There is no notation on the slab as to the edge lettering, but it probably is "crushed" or flattened in some way, as are the other Proofs of this era. A foremost rarity in Proof and worth a record price. Identifiable by a tiny tick mark located on the left side of the O in the denomination, and in PCGS holder #3369592.

Half Dollar. 1836 Reeded Edge. NGC graded MS-64. A better than average struck example with exceptionally choice satiny mint lustre; all, is enhanced by medium even lilac toning mixed with golden highlights. This lovely gem should stir considerable bidder interest among both type collectors and bust half enthusiasts. A very rare date as a mere 1200 were struck using Gobrecht's new design for the steam press. NGC population of only 2 with 2 higher.
For many years this issue was thought of as a pattern, however, new research has proven that these half dollars were in fact made for general circulation and as such, is one of the key dates in the entire half dollar series.

Half Dollar. 1841. NGC graded MS-65. This is likely the very Finest Known 1841 Half Dollar. It is the only coin so graded by NGC, and PCGS hasn't graded any gems. A glance will see why, the surfaces are free of all but the smallest contact ticks, and the luster is full and complete. The fields have a delicate rose-gold tone on both sides. During shipping the NGC holder has a short crack on the reverse, which will likely show up in the photograph, but this does not affect the coin, and hopefully the next owner will have the coin reholdered. Strongly struck with full details on Liberty and the eagle on the reverse. An outstanding gem coin that will be a highlight in any collection it graces.

Half Dollar. 1852-O. PCI graded Proof 50, damaged rim. An extremely rare coin that should be examined by specialists. Thought to be one of only 3 struck in Proof from this important branch Mint. Originally, this coin resided in the Norweb collection, where it was sold by Bowers and Merena in 1987 as lot 3158 (auction lot insert included) and the Norweb pedigree is noted on the holder. The coin never circulated, but has been mishandled to some minor extent, as the PCI holder notes that there is a "damaged rim". Examination fails to note anything irregular, perhaps the wire rim (if any) was filed off. Nevertheless, the fields have full reflective mirroring, but show myriad marks from handling and cleaning (as do all known, by the way).

Thought to be one of only 3 traced by Breen, this one shows Liberty's foot not supported, with faint die file marks between UNIT and the wing. An important and decidedly rare coin that any specialist will appreciate. Downgraded because of the hidden damage on the rim, but not for actual circulation as there is no wear on Liberty or on the eagle.

Half Dollar. 1859-O. PCGS graded MS-66. One of the very finest known of the date, PCGS has only graded 3 this high, and one can see why, the surfaces are a delight, frosty and lustrous, all graced by a delicate rainbow of colors around the periphery. Satiny luster in the fields, and boldly struck, with each star showing complete radial lines. Although a common date, this coin is decidedly uncommon in its near-perfect status. If you need a true gem Mint State 66 then look no further than this lot.

Half Dollar. 1881. AU-58. Prooflike. As are most of the regular issue mintage of this date. The Philadelphia Mint, and all the others as well, focused their entire energy on producing millions and millions of Morgan Dollars, and ran off only 10,000 coins for circulation. Lovely toning with some medium gold at the periphery, and typical hairlines in the fields. Well struck, too.

Barber Half Dollar. 1896-O. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty white gem of this rare, low mintage (924,000) date. Untoned and desirable in every way. This is the only coin so graded by NGC, with a single coin (the stunning Eliasberg MS-67) graded higher by NGC. PCGS has only graded two this high, with none graded higher by that service. Therefore, this coin is one of the four finest known of the entire date! If you are a serious Barber Half Dollar collector, then be sure to bid liberally on this rarity, for such an opportunity may not present itself again for many years to come, and lock away this gem.

Barber Half Dollar. 1902. Proof 63. One of a lucky 777 struck in 1902, this choice Proof retains mint brilliance under the moderate gray toning. The Philadelphia Mint was experimenting when this coin was produced, both the devices and fields have a similar surface as the Mint stopped producing the contrasting devices to mirror fields that had predominated for decades before. Scarce and desirable.
